CREATIVE SCHOOLS INITIATIVE

Listen

The Creative Schools Initiative builds school and community partnerships that place creativity at the center of learning and build the creative and critical thinking skills that students need to succeed.

This is what education is supposed to be.”

Cathy Butterfield / Montpelier High School
Social studies teacher / CSI Class of 2016

Classroom teachers and teaching artists participating in the Creative Schools Initiative join in a three-phased process that includes a graduate course in curriculum integration:

PLAN PreK-12 teachers partner with teaching artists and attend planning intensives to design creative projects that integrate into the core curriculum.

LEARN Teachers receive professional development with top leaders in the fields of curriculum integration and the teaching and assessing of transferable skills.

PROGRAM Teaching artist residency projects culminate with public events that exhibit student learning and bring communities together.

One of the biggest surprises for me is the whole way my thinking about education has changed. It has shifted into a whole new light.”

Teams of at least three teachers from different content areas may apply for a CSI teaching artist residency award. Teams awarded a teaching artist residency agree to attend a five-day planning and learning intensive in June, for which teachers receive three graduate credits or a certificate of participation.
